Steampunk Writing Prompts #4: Opening Lines

As promised, the start of every month is now Steampunk Writing Prompts day!  Feel free to post your own opening line or first paragraph from your own steampunk story.

1.  Lady Hartford will be furious, thought Miss Matilda as she checked the pneumatic tube once more for an invitation to the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Celebration Dinner.  So far the only message had been a letter from Lady Chatterley announcing that her invitation had arrived first thing that morning.

2.   The detective smile may have appeared kind, but I could not help but notice he was wearing a lie-detector monocle.
"Forgive me, but I must ask.  When did you last see Professor Morrow?"

3.  Felicia Griffin tore up the latest set of blueprints and threw them at her brother.  "The World's Fair is only three days away," she screamed, "and our difference engine is acting more like an indifference engine."
