Steampunk Writing Prompts #1: Opening Lines

Do you love steampunk stories and want to write one of your own?  Here are some sample opening lines to inspire you:

1. Automatons were to be seen, not heard.  Bartholomew had learned that the hard way, but he could remain silent no longer.

2. What Lucinda loved most about her new night-goggles was that they'd go with anything in her extensive wardrobe.

3. Professor Harper detested Lord Byron, but he was her only hope of securing funding to perfect her latest invention: an automatic anti-vampire gun.

4.  He knew getting into that steam-carriage would be a mistake.  Unfortunately for him, the Society had left him no choice.

5. Emmeline had agreed to meet him outside the Crystal Palace that morning, but when saw the airships looming overhead, she knew she might never see him again.

    1. Thanks everyone for the feedback. I have just added a new "steampunk writing prompts" post, but will write more in the future. Are you just looking for steampunk prompts, or do other genres interest you as well?
