Book Picks: "The Girl in the Steel Corset" by Kady Cross

"The Girl in the Steel Corset" is a must-read for steampunk fans.  Kady Cross envisioned it as teen X-men meets "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" but it is much more.
The main character, Finley August-Raynes, is no ordinary Victorian servant girl.  Like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, she has a dark side, and when it takes her over, she has the strength to kill if necessary.

She flees after fighting off the unwanted advances of a young lord, and by happenstance is taken in by Griffin King, a young duke who also has special powers.  Finley agrees to help him and his friends locate an elusive criminal known as The Machinist.  During her investigations, she encounters the handsome, but dangerous, Jack Dandy and despite her feelings for Griffin, she finds herself increasingly drawn to him.

I give this book four robotic hearts out of five.

Already read the book?

The next book in the Steampunk Chronicles series, "The Girl in the Clockwork Collar" comes out May 22, 2012.  In the meantime, check out the prequel "The Strange Case of Finley Jane", which is currently free on Amazon for Kindle (click here).

Spoilers Warning - click "Read More" only if you've read the book.

As much as I enjoyed "The Girl in the Steel Corset", was I the only one who thought the Machinist's plans were obvious?   It seemed ridiculous that such an intelligent group of people took so long (end of Chapter 17) to figure it out, especially in a world where automatons were commonplace.  I also thought The Machinist's identity was obvious, but at least I could understand why Sam was fooled.
Now for the question you really want to answer:  who would you choose, Jack Dandy or Griffin King?
